I have brewed ethanol at almost theoretical yields (Gay-Lussac), without using cultures, repeatedly in batch systems, and also distilled these batches into 90% spirit in a fractionating column, and thereafter into 200 proof ethanol using azeotropes. This was conducted mainly to demonstrate that carbohydrates from tapioca or sugar-cane could easily be made into green auto fuel. End of story. I could not find a single guy or institute to take up the idea in my country , India which I visited a few years ago where the sugar- cane farmers are getting ripped by big boys ( petrol costs USD 0.8 per litre there in Chennai), or even USA where I am now where all the kiosks are `Exxon, Mobil, Getty, etc' and still no sign of ethanol kiosks. How to solve this problem of convincing the world at large to begin using ethanol? Like Brazil. If the days of days of cheap petrol are over and when you know that petrochemicals poison the earth and atmosphere·why the lack of governmental action? Are we so corrupt? I think we are still heading towards doomsday and I don't mean the Arabs or nuclear war. We are doing ourselves and our children in. With greater biomass use we will all benefit immensely whichever side you look at it from. Save planet earth now.
