Hey everyone, thanks for your input! Sorry it's taken me a few days to get
back into the discussion; I was spending time with my mom while she was in
town.

I've been trying out the settings and bindings people have recommended for
vim, and they are really nice. I'm going to play with them for a while and
see if I can make them work for me.

I wish it was possible to hit, say, F9 in vim, and have the output go to the

Because of this, I'm also going to take another look at emacs. I really like
the ability to run a shell in the same window as the editor (as far as I can
tell, vim can't do this by itself, you have to use screen or a separate
shell). Emacs does this really easily; I got this set up in a few minutes
this morning:

Kirill, thanks for all the vim tips, particularly the stuff about piping.
I've incorporated a bunch of stuff from your vimrc into my own.
