Apparently there's an open issue to recognize math in tesseract (open source OCR software) https://code.google.com/p/tesseract-ocr/issues/detail?id=270 Unfortunately, tesseract seems to have limited support for layout analysis, so it's probably not going to recognize fractions/square roots. An
