uses them.
1) That's probably right, but i was basically adding directories as i
needed them and synfig-core only needs src/ to be built.

Master branch should be pretty stable, so you can use that if you want
to have latest changes and build synfig yourself. There are also some
"development builds" here: https://morevnaproject.org/synfig/
