In Texas, JimAnne Baker of Cisco will probably sign with Texas Tech to play basketball (a top 10 program). As a junior she triple jumped in the mid 42s, long jumped 20-6 and ran a 54-second split on the 1,600 relay. She won five gold medals at the state meet here (both horizintal jumps, the 200 and the 800 and 1,600 relays). She's 5-foot-11, cut out of marble and absolutely the best heptathle/decathle prospect I've ever seen. Too bad she probably won't run track in college.
BTW, Alicia Thompson, the sixth player for the Indiana Fever of the WNBA, was a 49-foot shot putter in high school. I saw her do that in a little grass field at the Cotton Patch Relays in Wall, Texas. I'm thinking that meet record might last a while. > -----Original Message----- > From: Ed Grant [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Saturday, August 24, 2002 7:00 PM > To: track net > Subject: t-and-f: Two-Sport stars > > Netters: > > It occurred to me while doing my CC preview for the coming NJ HS > CC > season that we could field quite a basketball team here from track and > field > stars who have won, at least, state sectional honors. > > Kelly Robinson of Raitan, our AG JT champ, was an all-state > selection last winter. > > Sara Best, a member of Voorhees National 3200R champs, and Ashley > Wolf of Montville, who won county and conference CC honors last fall (and > gave away the sectionals to a classmate) and ran a 5:10 1600 in the > spring, > took local all-star honors in basketball > > Shakeema Martin of Lakewood, who finished 2nd in the AG 400 after > winning her sectional crown, is an all-Shgore and Gr, III all-star > > Stephanie Machin of New Providence, who triple the hurdles and LJ > in > her sectional meet, stars for the Pioneers in both soccer and basketball, > where she passed the 1000-point mark last winter and earned all-Gr, I > honors. > > Hopefully, most of them will follow track and field in college, > though Robinson and Martin will probably also double in the cage sport > Ed Grant >
