What an interesting contrast in values on TV last night (not that we should look to TV for our values anyway). After watching the Seahawks take a 45-10 halftime lead over the Vikings in the ESPN Sunday night game - where the centerpiece of the broadcast was Randy Moss and his extracurricular activities the past week - I decided to surf for something else. Came across an episode of "Leave It to Beaver" on Nickelodeon. The espisode centered on Wally getting ready for his big track meet where he was supposed to run the 100 and the 220, but "he wasn't as good in the 220, because he used to tie up at the end." Mr. Cleaver was even going to take the day off of work to make the trip to watch his son compete. However, the day before the meet, Wally got suspended from the team for a week for - gasp - throwing wet towels in the locker room after the coach made a decree of no horseplay. The remainder of the episode (as always) dealt with the parents' efforts to make sure Wally learned his lesson. Another classic was a scene on Wally dealing with his guilt (laid on him by the Beave) that the team might lose the meet because of his suspension. Interesting contrast between '50's and '00's values between channel 26 and channel 49. I wonder if Randy Moss could have made the team at Harrison High. My favorite quote from the episode. Mr Cleaver tells the Beave that he may turn out to be the next track star of the family. Quoth the Beave, "I'll never run track. I couldn't stand it if I came in second." The Beave was one hell of a competitor. RC
