Over the weekend some suicidal maniac started a thread suggesting that WRs could only be set in the OG or WC. If the object is to kill the sport completely, I can't think of a much better suggestion. Yes, it's a shame that the sport has become so record-centered (and concomitantly anti-competition), but that's our niche and we'd better make the most of it. The newspaper readers of greater San Francisco were able to find out this weekend that Stacy Dragila had set more WRs in the vault, that Marla Runyan had set an AR in the 5K and that Gabriela Szabo had set a 3K WR in Europe. Had the cachet of "record" been removed from those performances and I can assure you that the only track that would have been our pages would have been from Daytona. gh
