In summary:
- I used a new machine with debia
I cleared the build products and ran rake build again, the result was
the same. diffoscope output attached.

So the problem in your ISO image is that /etc/hostname gets all executable bits
set, which shouldn't happen. I've filed this as:

I attempted to reproduce Tails 3.1 on an Ubuntu 17.04 x86_64 machine
following the instructions sent to tor-...@lists.torproject.org [1]. The
resulting sha512sum of tails-amd64-3.1.iso (shown below) is different from
the expected result, but is consistent on my machine if I follow the same
instruc
