May I suggest using Yahoo Messenger, and I wrote an app to improve its
accessibility called Yahoo Messenger Enhance which you can find using AppGet.
This is probably the easiest way of reading your email messages.

Just for the halibut, I tried to reclass the wordpad rich edit. WE gave me
the choice of focus or mouse, then after I chose, told me it was unable to
reclass standard rich edit. So...it doesn't always work.
