Edge has become my default browser and nothing I have done has been able to
change the situation. I have tried to install Crome as my default browser
but that has not worked. Is Microsoft imposing Edge on us irrespective of
our wishes and, if so, how does the wretched program work?

Thank God this hasn't happened to me as of yet (knock on wood), but the
problem with just settling for that is that it is mighty inconvenient
for those times when you simply press enter on a link in an email
message, and you end up with a browser that is even more inconvenient if

Did you try what I recommended: Open the start menu and type "web
browser"?
Choose a default browser should come up in the list.
If that doesn't work, open Settings, System, Default Apps, and tab down
to the Web Browser button. It should say Web browser button Edge.
