I had a similar problem with WE going silent while using ThunderBird. I
found that I had to update my ThunderBird and after doing this I have
had no problems with ThunderBird anymore.

In that case, have you customized your Thunderbird profile, such as by adding
any additional add-ons or behavior different from the defaults? Is this
something you can reproduce on demand, even after creating a new profile?

I must respectfuly disagree. I use Thunderbird as my primary email client and
am able to use it without any significant problems. With that said, I am using
the current version of Thunderbird under Windows 8.1. Which TB are you using,
and under which operating system?
