I have mapped bus stops as a node next to the highway, and connected it with a
service way, at least where there are a bay where the bus can stop next to the
highway. This node could also be connected with a walkway or sidewalk way,
though I havn't started with that detailed level of mapping yet
There are a million highway=bus_stop nodes, they are rendered, and there's
no very good reason to change them.
There are 118,000 public_transport=platform nodes, of which 67% also have
highway tags.
I'd just put highway=bus_stop on the public_transport=platform nodes (if
they are bus stops), and

I started this practise long ago before we had any properly working routing, I
was than in the impression that they needed to be connected to the highway (if
I remember correctly, the wiki page said something like "on thte road where the
bus stops",) and I needed to destinguish between left and

What are you considering to be the difference between a "stop position" and
"where the stop is"? I consider where something is to be its position.

The public_transport=stop_position is a node of the highway itself. What I
consider to be where the stop is, is always a node that is not connected
and to one side of the highway. When possible, I use the center of the B of
the word B U S written on the asphalt. Failing that one corner of the

He is talking about the tag value, "stop_position":
