Kate,

Ushahidi is free to just use this as an extra input/and-or/output channel.

It is clearly not the mission of OSM to handle this kind of content.

Assuming that OSM would be available on a smartphone, this appeared like a very simple way to add valuable information input and output on the map.

Here is an extract of a thread about this on OSM-talk :

---

For someone with an iPhone (or Google phone) with OSM with a layer including OSMBugs=OSMEmergency in it

Exemple use case 1:
You want to report a emergency request. As soon as you are in an area with Internet access, you click on the location, type your report, and the whole world can see it.

Exemple use case 2:
You are looking for someone who has been calling for help. As long as you are in a covered area, you have the location on your screen and you can get incoming status updates.

---

The thread is archived ending there:
http://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/talk/2010-January/047485.html

OSM is in open access in and out.

If you have specific requests for interfacing with Ushahidi, please ask on OSM-talk.

Is there a (human) email address where people can forward reports from OSM, as a quick temporary solution ?

Sincerely yours,

Jean-Guilhem Cailton

Hey isn't this what Ushahidi already does? Wouldn't it be better to
combine efforts than have two data flows?

I applaud the effort, but lets not duplicate efforts.

Thanks,

An OpenStreetMap-Emergencies page has just been set up by Patrick "Petschge"
Kilian at: http://ose.petschge.de/

It is a clone of OpenStreetBugs, aimed to help mappers and rescue workers in
Haiti.

The legend has been changed to :
"This tool is meant as a simple way to receive and display geo-related
emergency requests (for the whole world to see and process). It was inspired
by the Haiti situation."

To add a report, click at the desired spot in the map.

In this experimental phase, it can be used for any need that seems relevant.
Refinements and forwarding to processing agencies and NGOs will come later.

Please cc: your questions to OSM-talk and to the new open
