I was under the impression that this tool:

was able to show historical geometry, but whenever I try to use it I fail.
Either it's not working properly yet, or I don't know how to use it.

I still haven't updated the old overpass-api.de version, the new attic
version is still at:
http://nrenner.github.io/achavi/
There are two main limitations though:
1. achavi has no interface to query single objects
2. Overpass attic data only goes back until license change in September 2012
