Do Google know something we don't?
Just noticed a new city called Avon somewhere between Swindon and Bath. Bug or
secret new city only Google are party to? ;-)

It also appears on Yahoo maps and Apple maps, in both cases as small
place only visible at high zooms.

It's in OSM http://www.openstreetmap.org/node/413600880 as a hamlet.

At that level of details, all the mappers rely on OS Data. Google do
allow some cloud sourced input, but the fact the other have the same
It appears to actually exist; postcode SN15 4LS gives several addresses
in Avon, Chippenham.
Maybe Google are matching that hamlet to the ceremonial county of Avon
and getting it wrong?

So while it's a place, for some reason iGoogle seem to think it's as big as
Bath and Swindon!
A search for Avon new town doesn't seem to reveal anything though, so
presumably not a new town site?

Sorry just seen some of the other replies.
Could be something to do with Avon but that doesn't seem to exist as a
ceremonal county:

Hi,
Sorry! not my weekend obviously.
Another bug has come to light as a result of over-zealous search-and-replace to
correct the first bug.
Due to a change in directory structure I replaced all 0.7s with fm, and the
result was that the default longitude -0.72 was replaced with -fm2, oops!
You are right, Avon is not a Ceremonial County as I said but it has gone
the way of Middlesex - only existing in an archaic form of postal
addressing. It is a former postal county according to this:

Hi all,
I heard of something that will be fun for someone who likes mapping trees!
There's a project in Cambridge that is planting many apple trees, one
of each variety, in a pattern centred around the south of Cambridge.
It's said to be an art project called Cambridge Community
Collection:
Jerry,
Yes, I bet it is difficult! If it's any consolation, apparently
they're planting the trees in alphabetical order of the variety name,
so mapping the trees will be like solving one big word-puzzle...
