Hi Ian, Good that you identified OSM as a key part in this project.
As noted on the forum, you probably want to avoid adding access=yes. The access tags (access, vehicle, motor_vehicle foot, etc) are a hierarchy as shown in the diagram linked below. Adding access=yes would imply that all other access types down the hierarchy are also yes unless explicitly set to some other value. Generally I would recommend adding the designation tag (the legal status) and only adding access tags if you know them 100% on a case by case basis. The example here is whether a path can be used by cyclists.
