I don't think its possible in potlatch, however you can use JOSM.
In JOSM download the area you want work with , select the option to download
as new layer for both data and GPX tracks..
Now open your GPX tracks from local file and use the hide layer feature.

yes - I think it is shft-click on the trace icon. Not sure.
