As far as i know, elevation contours can be extracted from openly
available data sets from ASTER / SRTM / ALOS satellite imagery services.
Each one has different spatial resolution and elevation accuracy
depending upon the measurement (remote sensing) technology.
Do take
It should definitely be SRTM, there is no other open global DEM of that
quality.
