I'm not against it, but it _is_ the trunk route. If routing software can't handle it, it's a routing problem. Of course, it's also a display problem if you reduce it to primary, because it will dissappear from most maps at sane zoom levels, as they can't handle iceland being so special.
the problem is that OSM still has a few too many _british_ things about it, particularly things like the british legal definition of a trunk road, which simply doesn't apply in other countries. Should we relabel all icelandic roads with vegagerðin levels, and teach the routing software what the local levels mean, and teach the rendering tools what's appropriate for iceland? _maybe_ but that's a lot of work :) It's the problem you're running into though of course, so it has to be addressed eventually. People try and use what seems the best to get a rendered map that appears sane and has the right connections on it. I'd lean heavily towards convincing routing software that iceland needs localization heuristics.
