Charles, The zipcode information from census.gov aren't official zipcodes. Only the USPS knows those and they don't give them out very often. Also, zip codes are not polygons, but lines. Also, the data from Census is from 2010 and hasn't been updated since. It's my opinion that they should not be

Hi Charles, Thanks for willing to help out getting better ZIP code coverage into OSM. Importing from Census however is not the way to go, for reasons Ian pointed out just now. I would add that OSM already contains higher level administrative boundaries, most of which also derive from Census data.

Formally, the Census product is called ZCTAs - Zip Code Tabulation Areas, and they are polygons. They are useful in a variety of operations internal to Census Bureau, and externally as part of the transportation planning program but, as others have pointed out, they are NOT official Zip codes. The
