The registration is off by between 75-200' in some areas.  On top of that,
some of the patterns mkgmap uses when rendering to Garmin .IMG format tend
to bog down the processor on my Nuvi.  I can live with the clutter in mapnik
& osmrender, but since I'm using the weekly mkgmap render service at
http://garmin.na1400.info/, I don't have any control over the renderer as
you suggest.

I'll have to pull up the details of the bulk import project, but many of the
polygones look like zoning commision plats.  I've driven through a number of
business and residential areas that are still marked as "forest" or
"farm/cropland."

Here's a permalink to an example area along the TN/GA border.  Note how the
"Transportation/Communications" polygon is about 250 meters west of I-75.
