Yes it is true, there was an article a while ago

If we cannot convince government to share, we will just have to make
sure our data is better
Is anyone else having an issue getting into the brainstormmag.co.za website?
I get: "41.223.60.60 : ZAF - Unauthorized access!"
I had similar issues whet Heather posted an article on the same site.

Same thing.
It's not that I'm worried about reading the article, it's just that I
presume that if
Since the comment there quotes me, I might as well add my 2 cents here:P
When I was at the Cape Town GIS department collecting the data that we
imported into OSM, they mentioned while I was chatting to them that they
were going to start using a commercial mapping provider. This may be hear

Works for me.

Hi All,
I've just uploaded about 100mb of GPS traces from around KZN and certain
other areas. Honestly, I'm no good at committing edits or even making edits
- I hope somebody can use this data to actually do something useful.
Cheers
Chris.

Yup... it's going ahead. I've got 4 people (me and 3 others) definitely
attending. Even if it's just a handful of people going, we'll still be there.
Can we get a quick hands up of those still keen to join? It'd be nice to meet
the others mapping in and around Cape Town.
Regards,
Brendan Barre
I am sure it will be very useful!
Did you tag them with the tag South_Africa?
If not you can always add the tag afterwards
Here is the list of recently uploaded traces (tagged with South_Africa)

This weekend is D-Day

So Nic it seems like we are the only 2 in Gauteng, any other takers?
Nobody else keen to come say hello?
I would assume we need a laptop running the tileserver so we can at least
demo the maps.

Perhaps you two should fly out here and join the 5 of us on Sunday:P If it's a
sunny day in Cape Town (and we're expecting clear skies), it'll be the best for
mapping:P
Enjoy the Software Freedom Day event

excellent work! Thanks
I am sure it will be useful
you should try tagging data ( just a friendly warning, it is very
addictive!)
Editor can be found here

There is also lots of info on the wiki on tagging

Politely I must disagree, let people try a bit of surveying, let them
get out and have some fun and then at the break, say lunch, give them
a quick show of potlatch or josm so they can start mapping for
themselves. After all, South Africa is a big country.
