It seems a not uncommon practice to for place names to be markedin huge
writing (on a hillside). They're very visible and have, I feel, some
cartographic value.
Below is the start of a new tagging proposal. I thought I'd throw it

I don't think there is that many... I have seen the Riversdale one
yesterday purely by chance. I agree that they are worth mapping whether
they warrant a way is debatable but I am sure the owners of the various
signs would want them to be as prominent as possible, and ideally would
like them
Good idea and some thoughts:
They are definitely landmarks. Normally there is not mauch else where
they are. Therefore definitely cartographic value.
They may be South African only, not sure. Would be interesting to hear
once you start the process.
