I'm wondering if those 6/4 measures in the B part are just the result
of a idiosyncratic notation (in the notation in the files section). It
ends up being the same number of beats as 8 regular measures with
pickup notes at the beginning of the B. It's written out without those
6/4 measures in the J
I may be wrong, but every version I've heard has structured that part
differently, so I put it strongly in the "feel" category. There may
have been an agreed upon structure at some point, but it seems long
gone. If anyone has more input, I'd welcome hearing it. This is going
to be a regular rotatio
So what about the structure? I've been sitting counting bars after
tabbing out Hartford's first time round and learning a sheet music
transcription of Haley I found, and things are wildly different: the A
is the same: all in 4 but the last bar in 6 second time around, but
then Hartford seems to do
Hey, I've got that book! I'll have to look that up tonight. I'm in
standard tuning in my video.

I go with regular tuning for Garfield's...gotta get that low G
droning. I really like the "setting" that is in Jeff Todd Titon's
book. It seems to have all the parts that Hartford plays on the
"Speed" album.

Thanks Don, like everyone else, still a work in progress... Played a bit
slower you can move that low part and pull the drone out heavy. The funny
thing is that doesn't work real well on the fiddle, at least so far... :)

Here's a quick version. Still playing it a might bit fast for where I like
it. I don't hear it as a fast tune, I think it has a lope to it when you
find the groove.

You're getting close Don. I'm not sure what you changed to be able to play
it, so I can't say rightly or wrongly if there's a couple of things I'm
hearing that would keep you off the path. One of the distinct tones of the
tune on the B part, however, is making that D/Fnatural double stop or jump
Would someone who knows this tune tell me if I'm on the trail of the
whale or if I've been blown way off course? Took some from slowing
down Tater's version on NBB and changed some things so I could play
it. Still way slow.

I always wonder about mandolin in an old-time setting. Its not a
fiddle. Seems like the Tater managed a good run through to suit a
mandolin - banjo duo. Mighty fast pickin too. How many ideas are
there out there ...for mando and guitar or mando and fiddle duo, mando

Howdy all,
I put a copy of this file on my server for anyone that wants to
download it. It's a .mp4 so you can open it in QuickTime 7 and slow it
down to your heart's content (as long as your heart is contented with
QuickTime's slowest setting).
Here's the file:

Don,
The danged mandolin player didn't play the dots, but would sure like
to figger out a way to do it. Haven't figgered it out since 2000. Big
white Mutha Whale it is. Also, there's only two parts being
represented here, not the crooked part towards the end. Yet another
thing to do.

My program for grabbing youtubes won't work on this one but I finally
figured out there's no C part, duh. I've got the version off of 20
Year Blues slowed down to see what the TaterMasher did to the dots.
I started this one a long time ago and gave up. Time to try it again.
Great white whale tune,
I'm having some trouble connecting what's being played to the dots
posted in the files section. I guess I'd better grab that video off of
youtube and slow it down so I can see/hear what's going on better.
Sure is a cool tune and their hair styles sure are attractive.

Very nice Steve, thanks for posting, yes, the photo work was
excellent, and great picking. A wonderful duo, yep, worth a recording
