registered version of TB and no acknowledgements/receipts ever went out of OE.

You can mark mails in the trash as unread. Only messages sent to trash
by manually deleting them are automatically marked read.

That isn't so. When I filter spam straight to the trash folder, I have
to set the filter action to mark as read, or it shows up as unread
mail.
