Replying to myself :-):
This is now cured by changing the message list view date option from
"received" to "created". When restoring from a backup recently, it
reverted back to "received" without me noticing. As all the messages
had been imported from another email app on changing to TB, older
messages all had 1/5/2003, the date of the changeover, as the
"received" date.
Still, it raises the question why not all messages with that date were
displayed...
