I replaced the Hitachi 3TB drive that was producing the
write errors with a new 4TB drive. Copying of the files
took a while but was successful.The disk system seems
stable now.

the first SATA port.

smartctl -a /dev/sdf shows NO errors or relocated blocks.
The drive works perfectly after a reboot.
