Dear Thomas, I've seen in 20030107 pretest in default texmf.cnf
you enlarged max_strings to 10. AFAIK the upper limit of
max_strings is fixed in binaries and determined by:
@d ssup_max_strings == 65535
{Larger values may be used, but then the arrays consume much more memory.}
in tex.ch, so
