Installing the fonts seems to be simpler now, just that it's not terribly
well documented. I found that the following procedure works...

1. With a "Basic" MiKTeX 2.5 (i.e. without MiKTeX's MusiXTeX package)
incorporate a "localtexmf" root (e.g. C:\localtexmf): you have to create
C:\localtexmf\tex in order to do this or you get a cryptic error message
IIRC.
2. Copy MusiXTeX files as normal (don't install TFM files even if you were
redundantly doing that before: MiKTeX 2.5 doesn't look for TFM files in
normal roots AFAIK)
3. Copy PFB files for the type1 fonts to
C:\localtexmf\fonts\type1\public\musixtex
4. Copy DVIPS map to C:\localtexmf\fonts\map\dvips\musixtex BUT DO NOT
INSTALL THE DVIPDFM MAP
5. Run initexmf --mkmaps (after initexmf --update-fndb)

MiKTeX's internal updmap.cfg (which is the main font file for WEB2C which is
what MiKTeX is based on) already includes the "MixedMap musix.map" line
required to incorporate the fonts for pdftex and dvips. As far as I can see,
editing config.pdf and config.ps directly is something that WEB2C's
updmap.cfg tries to avoid the need for (though in MiKTeX 2.5 this is done
via the initexmf --edit-config-file command if you really need to).

However, because the line is already in updmap.cfg, as soon you provide
musix.map in your localtexmf tree, running initexmf --mkmaps tells MiKTeX to
incorporate the PFB files and it updates the configuration for pdftex, dvips
and dvipdfm automatically. If you install the DVIPDFM map by mistake then
you'll get lots of errors messages from pdftex and DVIPS though DVIPDFM I
think worked.

For any additional font problems, there are several guys on the MiKTeX-users
list who generally respond very quickly to font problems (however, in my
experience they tend to grumble at TeX rather than LaTeX users as we're not
using LaTeX's NFSS!). When you installed MiKTeX 2.5 did you upgrade from 2.4
as Robin mentioned? From all of the posts I've seen on the MiKTeX-users
list, upgrading seems to be a really bad idea!

It would be advisable to get instructions for MiKTeX 2.5 (and then hopefully
2.6) working as apparently the older versions of MiKTeX (including 2.5) do
not work under Windows Vista.

HTH,

David

Ah -- as the author of said instructions, this would seem to be where
I come in. :)

I will be happy to oblige on this point if -- and, I'm afraid, pretty
much only if -- we have someone listening in who knows how to sort out
arcane font issues in MikTeX 2.5 and would be available for advice and
troubleshooting at need. As I posted just after Christmas, I
encountered some strange behaviour with my favourite Palatino fonts
once I had MusixTeX up and running on MikTeX 2.5. The problem didn't
seem to be related to MusixTeX at all; it was some of the fonts I use
in titles etc. that the system couldn't find.

As I'm not even close to having the kind of TeX proficiency it would
take to sort this business out on my own, and as I needed a working
installation of MusixTeX at short notice, I ended up trashing MikTeX
2.5 and reinstalling my antiquated version 2.1.8, which is now working
the way I expect it to. However,if we have someone here who's able and
willing to talk me through any font issues that crop up, I'd be
prepared to have another try at 2.5 and to document the process of
installing MusixTeX on top of it. If not, I'll stick with the setup as
I have it now and turn over the maintenance of the Install Guide to
someone else, should anyone volunteer to handle it.
