I agree! This is a compilation of the best caving (spelunking) stories I have
ever read. Now Helmer can be recognized for his storytelling as well as his
early Texas Caver art work.
I can relate as I first started spelunking in the early 1950's with my first
wild cave being Frio Bat Cave in 1953. In the summer of 1955 two buddies and I
climbed into (and out of) The Devil's Sinkhole on the then existing shop-made
cable ladder. This was my greatest spelunking adventure except for the two day
exploration of Mayfield Cave with Jimmy Walker, Bob Hudson and his
brother-in-law, Ralph, at the end of 1955. We crossed the ledge with the aid of
the rope stretched along the wall over the pit and experienced the most
beautiful cave formations any of us had ever seen, before or since. An
adventure none of us will ever forget.
Any chance of getting Helmer to write more of his caving experiences?
