The helmet that saved Blake was an Ultimate, heavy but quite sturdy and saved me and others from some hard knocks. I once had a carabiner fall from about 60 ft and hit me square on the top of the helmet. Knocked me to my knees but no other damage other than ringing in the ears. Jerry Atkinson.

I have several authentic Coal Miner "soft hats/helmets" for mounting a carbide light and minor head protection. Those are probably worn prior to 1940. Now I also have my original caving helmet, black hard shell with a small bill only on the front that I wore in 1960, 8th grade. A few years ago a
