Just got a frantic call from my mother that a bat is flying around her bedroom.
They've had record cold temps this week (Indianapolis). Shouldn't bats be
hibernating right now? Any advise?

It could be a big brown bat. They move around during cold snaps and they like
houses. Handle only with thick gloves. They bite!

Thanks for the info. My brother, who lives locally (and wore gloves), confirmed
the presence of lots of teeth being displayed by a very unhappy bat as they
released it unharmed outside.

I've had a big brown in my house here in Missouri twice. They can come down the
chimney or even thru the clothes drier exhaust. Keep warm!
