Popular Science magazine just announced that they've scanned and put a
searchable archive online of their entire 137-year run.

The archive is not yet browsable by specific issue, but you can search for
any term and jump in from there. A quick glance shows lots of old articles
on Mammoth, Wind and Jewel, Carlsbad, turn-of-the-century articles by E. A.
Martel (considered the father of modern speleology), and an article teaching
you how to set pitons and body-rappel into pits.
