Dear Friends, Here are a few more announcements, just in time for the holidays:
* Karst Session at the 2017 Geological Society of America Joint Northeast-North Central Meeting, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA * Solution Mining Research Institute Technical Conference, Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA * International Congress of Speleology: Registration Prices and Visas * List of Upcoming Cave and Karst Meetings And it is always the holiday season at NCKRI because we always encourage the sharing of our information with anyone who may benefit from it. George -------------------------- 2017 Geological Society of America Joint Northeast-North Central Meeting, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Karst-related sessions 4. Karst Studies from the Appalachians to the Mid-Continent. Cosponsored by GSA Karst Division Douglas Gouzie, douglasgou...@missouristate.edu<mailto:douglasgou...@missouristate.edu>. Description: This session encourages papers presenting recent studies in karst areas-from fractured and folded rocks in the Appalachians to the relatively flat-lying carbonates of the mid-continent. Along with more traditional investigations, such as mapping and dye-tracing, we especially seek new and emerging approaches, including LiDAR, temperature and micro-tracers, statistical analyses, or other novel approaches to problems and resource management in karst areas. 5. Engineering and Environmental Geology of Karst Terranes. Cosponsored by the GSA Geophysics Division; GSA Karst Division; GSA Environmental & Engineering Geology Division Wendell Barner, Barner Consulting, LLC, wendell.bar...@gmail.com<mailto:wendell.bar...@gmail.com>; Bill Kochanov. Description: This session seeks papers on the engineering and environmental aspects of karst as it relates to land-use development in the north-central and northeastern regions of the United States. As land use encroaches upon karst terranes, the need is great for (1) accurate location of carbonate and evaporate features through geophysical and aerial imagery; (2) site characterization, remediation, and alternate land use designation; (3) emergency management protocol; and (4) engineering to help protect groundwater supplies, aquatic and cave-dwelling fauna, and other receptors from negative impacts resulting from development. Attached for your convenience is a link to the Section Meeting Page for additional information and a link for submitting abstracts. NENCGSA17 Meeting in Pittsburg, PA. March 19-21, 2017. The abstract deadline is midnight (Pacific Time), 3 January 2017. Absolutely no abstracts will be accepted after that time. The Technical Conference of the Solution Mining Research Institute is an opportunity for insights that natural and artificial solution cavities may provide for each other. The conference is scheduled for 23-26 April 2017 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. For details, see http://www.solutionmining.org/Conference/Details/9. -------------------------- International Congress of Speleology: Registration Prices and Visas The 15th International Congress of Speleology will be held in Sydney, Australia, in July 2017. One simple way to minimize the cost is to register before the end of January 2017. Afterward, the registration prices increase. For more details about the congress see https://www.speleo2017.com/. As you plan your travel to Australia, make sure you have the proper papers. People from the following regions qualify for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA): * Brunei - Darussalam * Canada * Hong Kong (SAR PRC) * Japan * Malaysia * Singapore * Korea, Rep of (South) * United States. To apply for an ETA online you must hold a passport and go to https://www.eta.immi.gov.au/ETAS3/etas. The cost is only $20 Australian (about $14.50 US). If you do not hold a passport from any of the above countries or regions, you cannot apply for an ETA online.
