Cut the guy a little slack. Most people (including journalists) know more about
the dangers of mines, where there oftentimes is a problem with enough good
quality air, so when a good journalist asks that kind of question, they're
asking that because they know that the audience might be wondering

After "Emily's Spring Break" at Lechuguilla Cave, somebody put
together a collection of TV news items recorded during the rescue. I
think I saw it at an NSS convention; no idea whether it can be seen
anywhere now. One of the more entertaining interviews has one TV
reporter asking Ron Kerbo
