Many young and even middle-aged cavers have probably not seen a most entertaining Disney short movie of about 40 years ago about coyotes in Hollywood. It may have been called Hollywood Coyotes but I am not certain. The coyotes would come down from the hills during the night in packs and run the residential neighborhoods feasting on garbage and possibly the unattended dog or cat. It makes for great watching and can probably be accessed through the Disney program archives. Biggest one I ever saw in either Texas of Mexico was the size of a fox. I've certainly seen bigger coyotes, even in central Texas near Driftwood (south of Austin) as well as in West Texas. Also in New Mexico, where people in the country used to joke that cats were coyote bait. There's even been a recent outbreak of coyotes snatching pets here in Virginia. It seems coyotes don't mind close contact with people. However I think I read something a few years ago that said a large part of coyotes' diets, at least in Texas, was made up of crickets! When Nancy Weaver and I had chickens in Driftwood, foxes and dogs were more of a problem for them than coyotes. Mark Minton
