OK, so I'll add a story that's similar to Andy's...awhile back we had
a DFW grotto trip into a water cave and Bill supplied a number of
people with his famous red Whisk laundry detergent bottles as floats.
The older cavers out there (that includes me) will remember those old
laundry detergent bottles, they were approximately 4" thick and 8"
wide and about 12" tall--just perfect to slide into your pack, and a
carabiner will fit on the handle. About halfway into the trip we found
a muddy side passage and Bill led a few cavers down the passage, but
he left his pack behind. Edwin Lehr had finally found an opportunity
to rock Bill's pack, but alas, there were no rocks to be found. So he
decided to fill Bill's Whisk bottle with water, which really caused
the whole pack to want to sink to the bottom of the passage. Bill
would have spent the whole rest of the trip trying to figure out why
his pack wouldn't float, but Edwin was new to the ways of rocking and
he was so pleased with himself that 5 minutes after Bill started back
upstream, Edwin asked him why his pack wasn't floating. That was
enough to tip Bill off to the fact that Edwin was messing with him,
and even Bill admitted that he wouldn't have realized the nature of
the problem until he had left the cave if Edwin had just stayed quiet.
Ask Bill sometime about how much his children like to rock him,
Diana

Probably no more than he likes rocking them!
Good story! :-)

Hmmmm....if the Terminal Siphons didn't already have prior use of the term,
I'd say these stories fall under the category of "Cavers Rocking Cavers".
Ka-thump!

Here is a nice post from Mary Kay.

Thanks, Fritz!
Here's the scoop: I'm transferring to Big Thicket National Preserve. The
headquarters is about 30 miles north of Beaumont. I'm in the process of buying
a house in Wildwood, a little community about 5 miles from the park HQ. The
backyard backs up to a golf course and has wooded lots on both sides, so it
still has sort of a secluded feel to even in a subdivision.
We all know that there's no other place like Big Bend. I will certainly miss
the Chisos Mountains, the dedicated park visitors who return year after year,
and doing educational programs with the visitors. Several people have told me
that Big Thicket is completely unlike any other national park area in many
ways, so I'll have a lot to learn in my new job. But I'm looking forward to new
challenges and adventures, and to being much closer to my family.
My going-away party is tonight. I'm a little concerned about all the dirt that
my friends and co-workers have on me after 20 years.
Feel free to share my contact info with others. Thanks again for your kind
words!
Mary Kay

Mary Kay,
Say it ain't so. We loved you in Big Bend. However, you will be closer to most
of us (and civilization) if you are in East Texas.
Where will you be domiciled? Russ also wanted to know your location and contact
information. I am sure that many in the caving community will want to know your
situation. You will be loved wherever you go.
Fritz

Concerning David's post, does anyone have a new e-mail address for Mary Kay?
Fritz

Have you ever found a long lost caver on Facebook ?
I did the other day.
Joe Galewsky. He was an active Aggie Caver around 1986 or 87.
I will try to get him to write something.
He is now a professor of Earth Science in New Mexico
So, dig out those old dusty grotto list and see if you can find somebody
and try to see if they have done any caving.

I would be interested in reading post about events that occurred at ICS
that I missed.
For example,
1. The opening ceremony party.
2. The NSS auction
3. The turnout at the consignment sales.
4. Caving trips at TCC, CWAN, Golondrinas, Wind Cave, etc.
5. Any opinions on how to improve or help the next convention
organizers.
6. Who all is excited and counting the days until Vermont?,
Colorado ??, The Czech Republic ??
9. SpeleoOlympics
10. Survey contest.
11. Tourist trip stories.
12. Exploration talks
13. etc.

I think Vermont will be a nice vacation though I really don't see myself
doing much caving there. The Czech Republic would be nice to get back to,
I've only gone there for air shows though unfortunately I'd prefer to spend
5K on more caving / diving gear.

My good friend Steve Deveny proofed the survey course to i wanna say 2cm and
is a professional surveyor. I don't really have any input there just wanted
to throw kudos where I could.

I know there were separate individual talks concerning the "big" caves of
the world throughout the week though I would have much preferred one "big"
session just covering the exploration of these select few caves.
Secondly I like to state that the exploration talks should be held later in
the day so that those whom are still young and in there prime ie explore are
up in time to hear the talks. Though it might just be me in not being able
to handle campground activities and being able to turn right around and
function so early in the morning ;).

I would be interested in knowing how many volunteers at ICS took time off of
their jobs with no vacation compensation
(they forsake income) to attend ICS?
Unemployment does not count.

Um - bad syntax...
I meant "(they had to forsake income) to attend..."
