High standard indeed. The property has come a long way, and I’ve personally
had many good times there. Thanks for your service!

Thomas,

Thanks for your kind words, it has really been a pleasure to have been involved
with the project and to get to know so many wonderful Texas cavers. I'm sure
someone else will step up and bring some fresh ideas and strong hands to the
site and it will continue to be the wonderful place it is.

Geary, you've been the "father figure" of Deep and Punkin for so long, it will
be hard to image it without you at the helm!

Thank you for your many years of service and stewardship. Your work and
cheerful demeanor have left me many fond memories, and I'm sure that's true for
all the other grotto members and grottos in the state.

What kind of news?

He made two very nice harnesses for Sara and me. Went to the extra hassle of making a removeable padded neoprene liner for comfort rappels.

Well, that's a bummer. Sewing is a dying art, and much needed in the caving
world to customize packs, knee pads, caving suits......maybe I should learn how
to use the one my mother left me......

Would anyone have any info on caves surveyed on land in the above
counties, specifically, the Stovall Ranch in Brewster Co. and the
Lockerby Ranch in Reagan Co.?

I was contacted by a kind, elderly gentleman named Guy Stovall about
some survey work that was done about 15 years ago on his ranch by some
folks from Carlsbad, according to him.

They left him a report, which he is looking for, and it was signed by a
caver who has since died.

He has a rather large ranch and he is on the board of directors for
Scottish Rite Hospital here in Dallas, who just happens to own the 180K+
acre Lockerby Ranch.

He is very interested in getting us out there, especially in you're an
SMU alumni, and this may be a good opportunity to look for some new
caves.

He stated that there are quite a few large ones on his ranch and the
group that came out spent the night in one and it had quite a few pits
in it.

I know that there was a Caves of Brewster County, printed by the TSS,
but don't know if Mr. Stovall's property/caves were included.

If you have anything or are interested in this, please contact me.

I will have more info on this and another caving opportunity at the
Convention.

Thanks!

Mark

Mark,

The TSS has one cave in it's files that fits that description: Frios
Blowhole (BRE099). It is on the Pine Mountain East 7.5' quadrangle. We
have coordinates. Jerry Atkinson was in contact with the owner in 1995.
One of the notes in the database says "While it is possible to
hand-over-hand the rope drop into the cave's main room, it would be much
safer to install a permanent ladder or restrict entry to parties
demonstrating a knowledge of technical rope climbing skills." We have
the cave listed as 255m long and about 22m deep.

Only 3 caves are listed for all of Reagan County: Watkins Cave, Kemper
Station Cave, and Big Lake State Park Cave. It looks like some
wide-open speleological territory.

To Fofo and all,

With reference to phd comics! One can easily prove any two numbers equal. I
remember this from high school days ugh, 50 some years ago:

Given:

One can maintain the equality of an equation as long as the same operation is
done to both sides.

a+b=c Multiply both sides by (a-b)

a2-b2=ca-cb Subtract ca from both sides, add b2 to both sides

a2-ca=b2-cb Complete the square by adding c2/4 to both sides

a2-ca+c2/4=b2-cb+b2/4 now take the square root of both sides

a-c/2=b-c/2 Add c/2 to both sides

a=b

Beautiful -- right? Try substituting real numbers such as 2+3=5 and maintain
the format. Results: 2=3.

What does this have to do with caving?? It sure could screw up our surveys!

I bet the press would have fun with this.

OK where is the fallacy?

Best regards,
Bill Walden
