*39. PLEADING ONE’S CASE.* *Dhanapati was a merchant living in Madurai. He did not have any children. So he adopted his nephew and brought him up in a rich life style.* *Later Dhanapati and his wife decided to go to Vaanaprastham in order to pray for a fuller life with children in their next birth.They gave away all their wealth to their adopted son and went to Vanavaasam.* *His agnates (Dhaayaathis) easily took away all the properties from his sister and nephew claiming to be the legal heirs of the merchant Dhanapati.* *Lands, house, cattle, gold, silver, money and jewels were taken away leaving the child and his mother penniless!The mother went to the temple and prayed to Siva to help her since she had no one else to help her.* *Siva appeared as a brahmin and told her,”God helps those who are helpless.Bring the case to the court again and lord appear as your witness”.* *She went straight to the agnates and told them to return the properties taken away from her. They ill treated her, beat her and scolded her. She ran to the king and lodged a complaint. The soldiers brought the offenders to the court.* *Siva appeared as the merchant Dhanapati and started exclaiming, “Is there a king in this land? Is there a God? Is there any justice in this land?” He embraced his sister and her son with great affection.He recited the long list of various jewels his nephew used to wear earlier.* *The agnates tried to twist the case stating that the man was an impostor and not Dhanapati. Now Dhanapati recited all the details about every one of the agnates.* *It was proved beyond doubts that the man was Dhanapati and he had gifted all his properties to his nephew.* *All the properties were returned to the nephew promptly.
