Tapas (तपस्):—Penance, the undergoing of religious austerities, the practice of self denial and of meditation and mental concentration helpful to self-denial.Tapas (तपस्, “penance”) represents one of the seven types of *prāyaścitta* (‘expiation’). Prāyaścitta means ‘purification’ of from the flaws or transmigressions.
९ ॥ *puṇyo gandhaḥ pṛthivyāṃ ca tejaś cāsmi vibhāvasau |jīvanaṃ sarva-bhūteṣu tapaś cāsmi tapasviṣu* || 9 || *puṇyaḥ*–the pure; *gandhaḥ*–fragrances; *pṛthivyām*–within the earth; *ca* –and; *tejaḥ*–the heat; *ca*–and; *asmi*–I am; *vibhāvasau*–within fire; * jīvanam*–life; *sarva-bhūteṣu*–in all beings; *tapaḥ*–austerity; *ca* –and; *asmi*–I am; *tapasviṣu*–in ascetics. I am the pure fragrance of the earth, the heat in fire, the life in all beings and the austerity of the ascetics. *śraddhayā parayā taptaṃ tapas tat tri-vidhaṃ naraiḥ |aphalākāṅkṣibhir yuktaiḥ sāttvikaṃ paricakṣate* || 17 || *śraddhayā*–faith; *parayā*–with great; *taptam*–executed; *tapaḥ* –austerity; *tat*–this; *tri-vidham*–threefold, in goodness, passion and ignorance; *naraiḥ*–by men; *aphala-ākāṅkṣibhiḥ*–without desire for results; *yuktaiḥ*–of concentrated and undivided mind; *sāttvikam*–in the quality of goodness; *paricakṣate*–is said to be. This threefold austerity performed with great faith and one-pointed attention by those who are free from desire for remuneration is said by learned persons to be governed by the quality of goodness. MUNDAKA UPANISHAD tapaḥśraddhe ye hyupavasantyaraṇye śāntā vidvāṃso bhaikṣyacaryāṃ carantaḥ | sūryadvāreṇa te virajāḥ prayānti yatrāmṛtaḥ sa puruṣo hyavyayātmā || 11 || 11. But they who perform *tapas* and *sraddha* in the forest, having a control over their senses, learned and living the life of a mendicant, go through the orb of the sun, their good and bad deeds consumed, to where the immortal and undecaying *purusha* is. Therefore Tirukkural said that only TAVAMU TAVAMUDARKKU AAGUM; tAPAS IS A DEEP RANGE MEDITATION WHICH IS ONLY FOR THE RENUNCIATE; EKADASI UPAVAASAM IS ONLY TO KEEP FIT WHERE GOD WORSHIP IS TAGGED; GOD EXPECTS ONLY PUSHPAMPALAM THOYAM HARI SABDAM; BHAKTHI. Indian concept of bhakthi has many roopams. H etried and failed . But he is not a renunciate. Tirukkural says there renunciate aalone can do the tapas and not meant for others. So interpretations like ozhukkam and Kattuppadu is not for that oneday ekadasi. Vratham is not tapas. A simple meditation ; and ekadasi vratham gives a lot of facility to train the system Thank you K R IRS 28724 29724 ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Chittanandam V R <chittananda...@gmail.com> Date: Sun, 28 Jul 2024 at 20:17 Subject: Fwd: Ekadasi Fasting To: *fasting* *It was only eight. By then Kumar was getting hungry. Don't wake up early in the morning and take a shower in a hurry! Stomach asks for food because of habit after bathing.* *"Would you like some coffee?" Lata said loudly from the kitchen.* *"Wouldn't I have drunk coffee as soon as I woke up in the morning? I have struggled to control myself for fasting. Why do you remind me like this?" Kumar said with irritation.* *"Who told you to fast Ekadasi?" Lata's murmur fell into his ear.* *It all came from that WhatsApp message. Explaining the glories of Ekadasi fast, the news mentioned that an American research institute after an extensive study found that people who observe Ekadasi fast do not suffer from health problems and live longer.* *After reading it, the thought arose in Kumar's mind that he should observe Ekadasi fast. The news came on Friday. Ekadasi is on the next day, Saturday. He had an office holiday that day. So he decided that Ekadasi fast could be done on that day.* A person who *usually* *wakes up at 8 am on a holiday day wakes up at 6 am and takes a bath. Even when Lata smelled the coffee, he suppressed his desire for coffee.* *Lata said, "There is nothing wrong with drinking coffee," but he refused.* *Now at 8 o'clock she asks him if he wants coffee again!* *At 9 o'clock, Kumar said, "I will go to the temple."* *Walking down the street, the smells from the hotels, tea shops, and the busy street food made him hungry.* *On entering the temple, a thought struck me. He thought that if there was any offering in the temple, he could eat it, so the fast would not be of any use. But on Ekadasi, we do not create food for Perumal! So no offering was available in the temple.* *It was very tiring while returning from the temple. Suddenly he entered a hotel.* *“A copy,” he said to the server. "Itli, Pongal is hot sir!" said the server. "Just bring the coffee, that's enough," said Kumar, indignantly.* *'A cup of coffee will do you no good. If you drink coffee at home, Lata will feel a little sarcastic. So he thought it was right to eat at the hotel.* *At about eleven o'clock a friend came to see him. Lata brought coffee only for him.* *When the friend asked, "Do you want to eat?", "Shall I give you coffee too?" Lata said.* *"Okay," interjected Kumar. Kumar thought that we had said yes without knowing him, 'We have already had a coffee at the hotel. There is nothing wrong with having another coffee' he reassured.* *At 1, Lata left the cooked food on the dining table and sat down to eat. Looking at Kumar "Are you also eating?" she said.* *"Cooking just for you?" Kumar said.* *"Can you cook like that correcta? The food I cook is enough for two people. Shall I get a plate for you too?"* *"I told you to fast for today!" Kumar said with irritation.* *"I know many people who are fasting on Ekadasi may eat alone. Even you may eat now and not eat at night."* "Ok," said Kumar hurriedly as *hunger gnawed at his stomach* *. He said, "At first, I will fast by eating only one meal. If I get used to this, it will be easy to fast for the whole day."* *Lata said, "Are you going to have a meal? Eat generously. I have eaten a lot. Don't worry about going without me."* *Kumar ate to his stomach as he thought how much she cares for him.* *When making coffee in the afternoon, he asked, "Should I make coffee for you too? Are you going to fast only for the night? Can we have coffee now?" Lata said.* *Kumar said nothing.* *After a while, Lata brought the coffee. "Do you want any biscuits?" she said.* *Kumar stared at her as if she was teasing him and said, "No."* *In the evening to the Latha shop **She is gone. In the middle of the day, the stomach started feeling hungry as if it had been digested after eating a lot. 'Do you want a biscuit?' He remembered his wife asking him.* *He searched the kitchen shelf. There were two or three types of biscuits. He took two of each. Next to the biscuit packets were a store-bought mixer packet and a peanut packet. He took them too.* *He tasted everything from biscuits, mixers and peanuts while watching TV.* *When Lata came back from the shop at six o'clock, she said, "I bought bananas for you at night. Don't go to bed empty-handed. There is nothing wrong with eating fruit and milk."* *She went inside and put the things she bought in the shop and came back with a package in her hand. She handed the packet to him saying, "They have put hot patties in the fake stall. They are hot. Try eating them."* *Fasting only at night. It is only six o'clock. Night comes at 7 o'clock. Kumar finished his patty as he thought he should not eat anything after 7 o'clock. The fritters were hot and delicious.* *He said, "Get the banana and give it to me. I will eat it now. Don't eat it at night."* *Stomach was completely full after eating* *four bananas given by wife* . *At 9 pm "Shall we give milk?" Lata said. 'Okay,' said Kumar weakly. His stomach, which had been full in the evening, was now beginning to feel hungry again.* *"No, do you eat some salt and drink milk?"* *"Is the salt red?"* *Lata said, "I am going to make rava salt. If you want, I will also make it for you."* *The thought of salt water made my tongue water. "Okay" he said.* *He ate hot salt dough and drank milk.* *By the time he went to bed at night, he seemed to have eaten more than he had ever eaten today while trying to keep his fast.* *Monasticism* *Chapter 27* *Penance 262* *Penance is also an insult to the penitent* *Athilar's performance* *.* *Meaning:* *Only those who are disciplined and self-disciplined can do penance. A person who does not have these qualities of penance is in vain trying to perform penance.* *Thanks to: Mr. Parthasarathy* *கதை கேளு கதை கேளு* *பகிர்வு நன்றி பதிவர்க்கு..* *விரதம்* *எட்டுதான் ஆகியிருந்தது.
