The Republic is governed in terms of the Constitution. All our laws derive their authority and force from the Constitution and the Constitution derives its authority from the people. The preamble to the Constitution sets out the aims and aspirations of the people of India. The Constitution of India came into force on January 26, 1950. It is a comprehensive document containing 395 Articles (divided into 22 Parts) and 12 Schedules. Fundamental rights are envisaged in Part III of the Constitution. Directive Principles of State Policy contains certain directives which are the guidelines for the future Government to lead the Country. Constitution lays down that the executive power of the Union shall be vested in the President and the executive power of the State is vested in the Governor and all executive action of the State has to be taken in the name of the Governor. The Supreme Court, which is the highest Court in the Country is an institution created by the Constitution. The subject of Constitutional law is of abiding interest and is constantly in the process of development.
