Most of his movies ran more than twenty-five weeks- the silver jubilee! Though he did not get any awards, commercially most of his films were successful. I will not give the meaning of the song verbatim because both English and Hindi are written differently. Their referencing is different; hence the verbatim explanation will be like a word to word translation. याद न जाए, बीते दिनों की जाके न आये जो दिन, दिल क्यूँ बुलाए, उन्हें दिल क्यों बुलाए याद न जाये … The lyricist talks about the days gone by. He is worried that the memory of those days simply does not go away from his mind. How these days slipped never to return again in his life, he muses. Why does the heart evoke those memories? The memory of those days just does not go away! Why does this happen? दिन जो पखेरू होते, पिंजरे में मैं रख लेता – पालता उनको जतन से पालता उनको जतन से, मोती के दाने देता सीने से रहता लगाए याद न जाए … He further thinks that if the days were like birds, he would have kept them in a golden cage, never to let them fly away, never to slip off! He would have looked after them with love and care! He would rear them with diligence. He further thinks that he would have fed the pearls and always held the days to his bosom! He simply can not forget those thoughts; the memories keep coming back all the time. तस्वीर उनकी छुपाके, रख दूँ जहाँ जी चाहे – मन में बसी ये मूरत मन में बसी ये मूरत, लेकिन मिटी न मिटाए कहने को है वो पराए याद न जाए … The lyricist further says that he will hide her image wherever he pleases, but it will be hidden in his heart away from this cruel world! The idea has found its permanent dwelling in his mind and soul! Whatever he does, it simply does not go away from the front of his eyes! From the viewpoint of the world, now she belongs to someone else. But her image can never be erased as far as the lyricist is concerned. These lines remind me of a line from Sahir’s famous song. Chalo Ek bar Firse! *Chalo **Ek **Baar **Phir se,* Ajnabii * ban jaayen ham donon* It must be challenging for the lovers who have decided to part ways! Sahir says, ” Let us become strangers again!” How harsh this feeling is; these are complex thoughts, even if they just come to your mind! How can lovers ever become strangers again? But then that is life probably! I am sure that the lovers have shared their dreams, their future! They must have thought about the life they will spend together. Suddenly they crash land to a stage where the need arises to become strangers. It is easy to say let go! But at every stage, every nook and corner, you will be continuously reminded of your lover! But is this true only about lovers? Not really. There can be friends, there can be writers, and there can be singers who create similar feelings in your mind.
