I do like the idea of using the RS-232 dongles whenever/wherever they are
adequate for the job.
While I've found the ISA (~$20) and PCI (>$100) cards from NI a good
value and supported quite well under both Linux and Windows, I'm also a
fan of the serial-to-488 converters. If you don't need the

It has been several years.
As I recall, I had several discussions about this with both Ulrich Rohde and
later with Fred Walls (formerly the head the NIST phase noise labs). I think the
errors we found were related to the calculation of the sideband phase noise
and/or the use of a single cw car
I've been using an Agilent 82357A USB interface. Plenty fast enough for most
applicationa and a lot easier to move between machines including laptops...
Found mine on ebay for about half price though they seem quite rare.

I just donated a 5370A manual and a 5370B manual to the Agilent

John,
Reset is really about the only way to do it unless you can see what messages
are coming out and disable them one at a time. If you have LOTS of time you can
just cycle through all the messages and shut them off, but resetting is
probably the easiest thing to do.

Hello,
I think that it depends on each message. You can establish periodic send
for several messages, and your unit must have one or more setup in that
way. You must send the order to stop each one (for example, if it is
sending the Eq message each seccond, you must send to the unit the

As far as I know all you can do is see what messages are being send and
turn each one off.

It's hard to say. I've seen mil-spec versions of
the 5238A shipped with a EGG 10811 clone.

Good point. Has someone posted a Z3801A vs.
PRS10/M12+ comparison? I have a lot of data
on the PRS10 but haven't put an M12+ to it yet.
