Re: [time-nuts] laser as clock source

Wait... no telescopes, very close distances... only a laser, with a photon limiter like a dark window, "close" like 10mm or so... just the space required for the laser optics plus the "limiter", and a photon counting detector that can be an APD or a PMT, it depends on the size required and sca

[time-nuts] FE-5680A tuning step and pre-lock stability?

2016-05-06 Thread Nick Sayer via time-nuts
I got a second 5680 in the mail the other day and so far my firmware isn’t bricking it, so.. yay. A couple of odd things have turned up, though. 1. So far as I can experimentally tell, the tuning step on this unit is 50 times larger than the 17E-15 quoted by FEI. Either the tuning curve is not

I sort of learned a bit about this the hard way not too long ago with my Crazy Clock. I bought crystals with a tolerance of 10 ppm, but what I learned was that what that actually meant was that if you buy 1000 of them and give them all the same load capacitance, they’ll all be within 10 ppm of e

[time-nuts] Slaving ET6000 off external 10MHz

2016-05-06 Thread Tom Knox
Hi All; Does anyone know if the ET6000 or 9730-6000 can be slaved off and external 10MHz source? I know for example the Microsemi XLI can be locked to an external reference, but cannot find find that function on the 6000 series unit I am playing with. THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP. Thomas K

Re: [time-nuts] synchronization for telescopes

Its before breakfast for me now, but you could set up a transmitter on a ISM frequency at 5 GHz or 60 GHz, where you have plenty of bandwidth (where plenty means 160 MHz or 2 GHz) and transmit your own clock signal. Either you roll your own by modifying some ham radio open source designs, or try

With regard to the data sheet, all the specified errors have to be added to get the worst case (though they may not all operate in the same direction). So you have the initial accuracy at delivery, + a term related to age, + a term related to temperature and any other factors that are specified. T
