Hi, I modified my RTL-SDR by adding a blue LED on one side of the crystal.
This helped a bit but there is still a little variation with temperature.
Anyone else run into this problem?
It seems spot-on when checked against available standards but lack an atomic
reference.

Whats up with it? There are related manuals for these around and one common
problem is bad 10K resistor on the lamp board.
Apparently the heat does them in over time.
Interestingly a lot of "military surplus" units can in fact be probed using a
random generator over serial port to see what comes
Something sitting on the antenna at certain times ? ie a pigeon or seagull..
Also electrical interference is a good possibility, I found that an SDR is a
good general diagnostics method.
Mine now has a chip antenna swiped from an ld Wifi dongle (2002) which

Hi,
Yes this is indeed the case but the procedure is quite fiddly. IIRC to do this
you need to get the lamp in a position where the heat gun can access the front
where the pinch is: problem might not be this at all.
I would visually inspect lamp and if it looks OK then check everything else

Doubt there is anything major wrong with it and for my needs it could
be fine.
