My old '465 will trigger on the 1pps, but it's far easier to see the trigger LED flash than finesse the brightness/sweep to make it visible - something possible only on a 'scope with a decently bright tube. Another cheap/easy trick to detect the 1pps pulse is simply to "listen" to it with an a

FWIW, I've re-crystalled a number of those 100 MHz-area '229 and similar Vectron oscillators and have had pretty good results and I thought that I'd make a comment or two. The '229's that I've seen that operate in the 100 MHz area use TO-5 mount crystals operating at 1/2 the output frequency

2012-02-13 Thread C. Turner
Last week I noted that the FE-5680A's "barefoot" output was found to NOT be a suitable 10 MHz reference for microwave transverters. Specifically, I tested it on two different 10 GHz transverters and found there to be objectionable levels of "grunge" on signals caused by low-level phase modulat

[time-nuts] FE-5680A's suitability for use as a 10 MHz reference for microwave transverters

2012-02-07 Thread C. Turner
Hello, As has been mentioned here before, the output of the "non-tunable" FE-5680A's has been noted to have low-level spurs in it - no doubt due to the way the various frequency loops are derived within, some using DDS techniques. It is for this reason that when I packaged my FE-5680A in its

I, too, am one that cleverly managed to cook the '240 chip: Too many clip leads in too small a space allowed the +15 to get into the lock indicator pin while I was evaluating the unit. It, too, worked OK after doing that. Rather than order another 74ACT240 or even just an HC/T240, I rummaged
