as young Nigel said, Marconi (for one) made use of these things. I
recall a Marconi HR-22 that had a number of these installed for spot
frequency channel reception.

Hm, I suspect, Rob, much though it might distress national pride, that RADAR
a la WWII has probably to qualify as an Anglo American product.
The Cousins did, after all, send us those nice klystrons they managed to get

You may find that the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) that exists
within XP and (not to mention NT, 2K and possibly Vista/7) might be
buggering things up. It denies direct, hands-on manipulation of the hardware
by an application and this is kind of likely to be what's needed by the
