I decided rather than order another adapter which might not fit I'd put
a BNC
connector in for the wide band input. Electrically it is trivial as
claimed.
Mechanically, I had to make a large hole in the plastic front panel to
allow tthe
BNC plug to slip on.

The 3586 is yet another item where the backup battery was often ignored
for very long periods and with very nasty results at times.

instruments sucking 10 MHz fr
I have one of these as well, interesting instrument. I used it with an adapter
for a while then one day got tired of that and found a nice BNC from my bin
which fit beautifully and got rid of the weird connector. It's much nicer this
way. At these frequencies the connector type is based on us
I think that valuable test equipment must stay original and unmodified: get
an adapter. Maybe you can find a cable with the proper connector and put a
BNC on the other end...
