i think its not real problem but problem due to wrong port number may be...
if u run webclient then:

Also when one database needs a restart of the server due to upgrade (-U all)
the other users can work further.
But you are right, if above is not needed one can run one instance.

You can start several instances of OpenERP-server with the same codebase and
assign them to different ports.
Then install a proxy on the same server and assign to every configured domain
name the correct ports assigned in the first step.

I think that in 5.0, trunk, you cannot place sql code in domain expressions
like that.
Interestingly, I have been experimenting with this issue. Under the condition
