I was just working up to asking the same question about a PIC impl...
Mostly to access internal features in a more general way, and make
use of the task and event paradigms. Is your nescc-pic code available?

the architecture of the PIC16 will severely limit what you can do with it, it's
really a generation behind any of the microcontroll
